The Miners Museum commissioned Trifos Design Consultants to prepare a concept design which would maximize the museums operating results, and improve efficiencies in its functional design and financial and operating procedures. For this concept, emphasis was placed on the economic development goals of the Museum with respect to heritage, tourism and culture, community employment needs, and food and hospitality services.
The design acknowledges that the museum must be an effective repository and visible promoter of Cape Breton Islands rich cultural and industrial coal-mining history. The design serves to achieve this mandate through revitalized exhibit spaces, efficient and enhanced performance spaces, as well as new profit centres, such as food/hospitality/restaurant services, efficient theater/assembly/event accommodations, and new retail spaces. New communications graphics, site improvements, and service infrastructure additions will also be created, in order to effectively enhance and celebrate the visitor experience.
Wherever possible, the design embraces the unique sculptural qualities of the original architecture. The existing palette of building materials is respected, enhanced, and incorporated into the design. The proposed design strives to ensure that the revitalized Miners Museum will continue to commemorate and celebrate the unique culture and heritage of Cape Breton's coal-mining industry.
