t. Francis Xavier University, in preparation for their 150th anniversary, commissioned Trifos Design Consultants to conduct a sequence of gate design concepts. The design exercise attempts to explore and demonstrate the symbolic role and expressive function of entrance gateways; particularly, for university grounds. In keeping with the spirit of neoclassical architecture, Trifos Design Consultants prepared several portal/gate concepts, all of which mark the transition from public community to private, university campus grounds. The primary, vehicular entrance to the campus is via West Street, on a median axis, aligned with the centre of Morrison Halls classical facade. A symmetrical articulation and modular proportioning were adopted for exploring various motifs, materials, and expressive decorative elements for the gates.
