rifos Design Consultants assisted the Sydney Airport Authority in assessing the current, physical state of their air terminal building, and to evaluate and propose solutions to the various issues by conducting the following:
Assessment of water-infiltration sources at walls, windows, sills, and roofing areas;
Evaluation of increasing the luggage-handling capacity of the arrivals area;
Evaluation of increasing the area of the arrival and departure spaces, and relocating the automobile-rental bays;
Evaluation of the feasibility of relocating and modifying the restaurant and bar/lounge areas;
Preparation of a conceptual design for tarmac-side passenger canopies and departure lounge; and
Preparation of a conceptual design for a modified public-entrance canopy.

The above work was executed and issues were assessed relative to current industry practices for building expansion, upgrading, programming, and cost-planning methodologies; all relative to preparing the Sydney Airport Authority to effectively meet the needs of the future. The departure lounge was cramped, and required more accommodating seating facilities. The design proposed an expansion towards the air-side tarmac, with a sky-lit lounge space, providing canopied walkways on either side. The entrance doors to the main lobby were to be extended outward, with a new entrance and ground-side canopy to the sidewalk. A new, sky-lit entrance canopy would serve to create a new and symbolic arrival/gateway to Cape Breton Island, for both visitors and residents alike. A new restaurant and bar/lounge were also incorporated into the renovation works. |
