his conceptual study envisioned the creation of a new, stand-alone edifice on the Silicon Island site. The proposed design sought to explore the judicious use of colour, geometry, and massing, applied to the typical office-block model; particularly when interpreting the primary Owners logo -- in this case a blue and green butterfly.
This speculative building was designed for a location adjacent the railroad tracks on the existing, Silicon Island site, near Sydneys Wentworth Park. The three-storey structure was designed to engage in a dialogue between corporate imagery and technological innovation. The conventional box was reshaped into an elliptical mass, bisected by a wing/fan shape, creating a central, translucent core. Polychromy was utilized to reinforce the companys identity-logo graphic, and to establish a marketing presence in the architecture.
The buildings clear, geometric, elliptical form provides for flexible office space, and enhances the buildings visual impact. The central portico, with orange columns and translucent front wall, anchors the building to the site, and serves as a strong entry statement. The exaggerated, monumental canopy and inverted, conical columns are meant to draw visitors inward to the lobby/ atrium. The lobby was designed to rise for three storeys, thereby creating a powerful and dramatic entry sequence.
