he University College of Cape Breton has a rapidly-growing student body, with an increased demand for economic, innovation, and technological programs and expertise. This demand has necessitated an immediate requirement for increased administrative facilities. The design proposes to vertically expand the existing Student-Union Building, located in the existing Campus-Centre.
The inherent challenge of this project will be the addition of two storeys to a fully-occupied building, without drastically affecting or disrupting ongoing operations. The construction would entail removal of existing roofing; roof-top structural-steel fabrication; demolition of the existing penthouse; and relocation of major, air-handling units. Further construction would entail masonry works; concrete pours; and elevator hoist-way extension.
The proposed facade treatment and material selection serves to accommodate the existing Rationalist-style narrative of the recent Campus-Centre architecture. |
